With online and on-demand fulfilment now one of the fastest-growing areas in food retail, Waitrose partnered with Trolley Supermarket to design a purpose-built picking trolley that genuinely supports staff on the shop floor.

Built around real-world picking needs

Unlike standard store trolleys adapted for picking, the ODG Trolley was designed from the ground up around how staff actually work on the shop floor:

• Dedicated storage for pick paper bags
• Integrated holders for pens, staplers, and sticker rolls
• Clear, organised layout to reduce searching and handling time
• Easy-access lower shelf for heavier or bulkier items
• Stable, manoeuvrable design for busy store environments

Every detail helps streamline the picking process, reduce fatigue, and improve overall efficiency — particularly during peak demand periods.

Proven in-store, scaled with confidence

Following an initial rollout of 650 ODG Trolleys across Waitrose stores, feedback from store teams and operational partners has been overwhelmingly positive. The trolley has become such a core part of the picking operation that an additional 400 units have now been ordered, bringing the total close to 1,100 trolleys in active use.

This rapid scale-up reflects both the success of the design and the growing importance of purpose-built equipment for on-demand grocery fulfilment.
